Gottfried Benns „Welle der Nacht“ – absolute Dichtung?
Entgegen der weit verbreiteten Auffassung, Benns Gedicht „Welle der Nacht“ würde auf keine außerhalb des Gedichts liegende Wirklichkeit referieren, wird in der vorliegenden Interpretation anhand einer bisher unberücksichtigten Parallelstelle aus Benns Essay „Dorische Welt“ ein konkreter kulturgeschichtlicher Bezug aufgezeigt. In der Interpretation wird darüber hinaus die Meinung vertreten, das Gedicht habe eine rationale Tiefenstruktur, die unmittelbar auf Oswald Spenglers Kulturkreismorphologie verweist. Eine inhaltsleere, absolute Dichtung liegt demnach nicht vor. Bisher unbeachtete, mögliche Quellen für die von Benn verwendeten Bilder werden angeführt.
Contrary to the widespread opinion that Benn’s poem “Wave of the Night” does not refer to an extra-literary reality, this interpretation will emphasize its concrete cultural-historical background by citing a previously unmentioned parallelmotif in Benn’s essay “The Dorian World” (1934). This interpretation will argue that the poem contains a rational deep-structure refering directly to Oswald Spengler’s morphology of cultural spheres. Thus no ‘absolute’ poem without semantic content exists. Some previously uncited potential sources for the images used in the poem will be noted.
