Verloren im Netzwerk. Überlegungen zur Unlesbarkeit der „Römischen Octavia“ Herzog Anton Ulrichs

Die großen höfischen Barockromane gelten aufgrund ihres Umfangs, der Vielzahl der in ihnen auftretenden Personen und der Kompliziertheit ihrer Handlung gemeinhin als ‚unlesbar‘. Der Beitrag erläutert am konkreten Beispiel von Herzog Anton Ulrichs „Römischer Octavia“ und ihren Netzstrukturen, dass eine solche Form der Unlesbarkeit zumindest zum Teil eine historisch bedingte ist, wobei zum einen lesersoziologische und zum anderen mediengeschichtliche Argumente ins Feld geführt werden. Zugleich wird an diesem eminenten Fall aber auch gezeigt, dass gerade er die Zeit, in der er selbst nicht mehr verstanden werden kann, bereits antizipiert hat. Er steht auf einer Wasserscheide zwischen der abenteuerlichen Liebesgeschichte älteren Formats und einer modernen Form des Romans. Aus einer historischen Unlesbarkeit wird damit auch eine strukturelle.
The long baroque courtly novels are regarded as ‘unreadable’ due to their size, the number of characters they contain and the complexity of their plots. Using the example of Duke Anton Ulrich’s “Römische Octavia” and its network structures, this article explains that such a form of unreadability is at least partially due to historical factors. The arguments for this point of view are concerned with the sociology of the readership on the one hand and the history of the medium on the other. At the same time, this celebrated case also shows that a time in which the work would no longer be understood was already anticipated. It stands on the watershed between the adventurous love story of the older type and a modern form of the novel. Historical unreadability thus also leads to structural unreadability.
