Übler Schutz: Die Pest und das Problem der Abwehr in Kleists „Der Findling“

Mit dem Pestmotiv verhandelt Kleists Novelle Der Findling nicht den ungewissen Ursprung und die unkontrollierbare Verbreitung moralischer Übel, sondern entwirft eine politische Immunologie. Die in den Bewegungen des Öffnens und Schließens enthaltene Figur eines scheiternden Schutzes erschließt sich über Kleists propagandistische Texte, die dazu aufrufen, der napoleonischen Invasion zuvorzukommen. Verlässlicher Schutz besteht in Kleists propagandistischem wie novellistischem Szenario einzig darin, Fremdkörpern prophylaktisch den Eingang zu versperren. Damit hat Kleists Novelle an einer von Roberto Esposito beschriebenen Umbesetzung des politischen Imaginären teil: Gemäß dem modernen Paradigma der Immunität hat der politische Körper nicht mehr innere Unstimmigkeiten auszugleichen, sondern muss sich gegen infektiöse Eindringlinge von außen immunisieren.
The plague motif in Kleist’s novella “Der Findling” is not associated with the uncertain origin and uncontrollable spreading of moral evil, but rather with the development of a political immunology. The figure of failed protection, which is embedded in the paradoxical movements of opening and closing, can be understood in conjunction with Kleist’s propagandistic texts, which propose anticipating the Napoleonic invasion. As the propagandistic and novelistic scenario suggests, reliable protection consists of preventing foreign bodies from entering. In this respect, Kleist’s novella participates in a shift in the political imagination as described by Roberto Esposito. According to the modern paradigm of immunity, the body politic no longer needs to balance its internal inconsistencies, but must render itself immune to infectious intruders from the outside.
